Petals and Pearls
The main focus of my time at college. For me this collection represented all the commitment I put into learning how to draft patterns across the two years.
I wish I could say it was a moment I had one day that led me to use each element to represent a person within that moment. But unfortunately that’s not the case, for me it was as simple as a quick scroll through Pinterest and TikTok. I wanted my main focus to be on the design element so that I had a chance to really learn how to draft different patterns as I have always been into maths and found this an interesting aspect of fashion design.
I went through a few designs for this collection as a part of college we had to do a client presentation which really made me think through what I was designing for my audience. After my client presentation I got recommended by my tutor to try mixing my designs together instead of keeping them so separated. I think it was this small bit of feedback that made the biggest change overall. This is what made me realise that it was a collection and there needed to be some similarities.
One of the hardest things to decide was how much detail I wanted to add to each dress. We had around 6 weeks to create each garment from start to finish which meant that if I wanted to add any details I needed to make sure it was possible by the end date. Although we had time to spare it wasn’t loads as the runway show was around the corner. To make it easier to sew the pearls, I reused old necklaces. Then for the flowers I used a gathering technique on a long strip of fabric to then swirl it into a rose.
The final runway shows came round sooner than I thought. Overalll I am so pleased and proud of myself for creating two garments that are wearable and look like my intended designs. This was my chance to really see everything that I had learnt come to life. Creating the patterns from scratch taught me how important it is to constantly measure but as you can see from the final show photos. I think this really pushed me but is what made me fall in love with ball gown designing. I hope that by showing you were I started you can see the progress I am making within the industry.
